The Burkettesville Wander is a nice 78-mile loop crossing the Maryland countryside and passing through Burkettesville, Harper’s Ferry, Shepherdstown, and Sharpsburg/Antietem Battlefield. Burkettesville, home of the infamous “Blair Witch”, is actually a well-preserved quaint, old Maryland town. Passing west over a mountain ridge, Gapland Road leads to Rt. 67 south to Harper’s Ferry (I highly recommend a stop for ice cream in historic downtown!) West on 340 from Harper’s Ferry is another great countryside road, Rt. 230 Halltown Road which leads to historic Shepherdstown’s lively art and cafe scene. Rt. 34 north passes through the heart of the Civil War’s Maryland Campaign, don’t miss a quick driving tour through Antietam!
